On May 17th, 2021 at approximately 1:14 AM, the Dickinson Police Department responded to a report of a domestic involving a weapon at an apartment in the 3300 block of 4th Avenue East.
Arriving units made contact with a witness of the event in the parking lot. Initial indications are that a male suspect fired towards officers or at someone else from inside a ground-floor apartment. Officers returned fire, fatally injuring him.
A female was located inside the apartment suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to St. Alexius Hospital. The suspect was declared deceased at the scene. Several children were inside the apartment at the time of the incident but were unharmed.
The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested to process the crime scene and investigate the officer-involved shooting. The two involved Dickinson PD officers were uninjured and are currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. This is a standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
Facts and circumstances surrounding this case remain under investigation. No further information will be released at this time.
