The Southwest Tactical Team (SWTT) recently added a fully-armored Lenco Bearcat tactical vehicle to the fleet. With funding help from Stark, Dunn, and Billings counties, as well as the City of Dickinson, the purchase is aimed at helping keep the tactical team and area communities safe.
The Bearcat was manufactured in Massachusetts, and took about 6 months to build. It is built on a Ford F-550 frame, weighs 19,000 pounds, and features armor capable of defeating the largest-caliber ammunition available on the civilian market.
The SWTT responds to tactical assistance calls for the City of Dickinson and all communities/counties located in southwest North Dakota. In the past, the team relied on non-armored vehicles to approach a potentially dangerous area. By having the Bearcat available to the team, it will now allow the team to conduct a mission much safer and with a greater chance of mission success.
The SWAT teams in Bismarck, Minot, Grand Forks, and Fargo also operate a Lenco Bearcat. The SWTT Bearcat is North Dakota's first "G3" off-road model. This was an important feature to include, since several of SWTTs callouts have been to rural locations.
