2007

A new addition has recently been added to the Dickinson PD website. A "Virtual Museum" of the department can be accessed by clicking the link on the left side of your screen (the "History" button).
Department members were cleaning out a room at the Law Enforcement Center this summer in preparations for remodeling. During the process, they came across a scrapbook containing newspaper articles from the late 1970's, courtesy of former Chief Henry Weber. This started a quest to gather and research the history of the department (events, people, places).
The "Virtual Museum" will be a project of constant updates and "exhibit" additions. We feel that the citizens and former members of the department will enjoy a look back on how the department evolved into what it is today.
Anyone who has articles, pictures, or stories to share that would make a good addition to the museum, you are urged to email the webmaster by Clicking Here or calling Patrolman Mike Hanel at 456-7759.
Please enjoy and contact us with any questions, comments, or corrections!

As the summer activities within the city are winding down, the Dickinson Police Department would like to thank all citizens and visitors for their cooperation and safety-minded participation during this year's Roughrider Days. We are pleased to report no serious incidents during the festivities. The downtown beer garden and dance cleared out without any problems.

Additional staffing was added throughout the course of the weekend. As a result, a total of 5 DUI arrests were made by city officers during the course of the Fourth of July weekend. Several more open container and urinating in public citations were issued as well.

The Dickinson Police Department also participated in Family Fun Day on June 30th at the Jaycee Park. SWTT Member Joe Cianni set up a tactical team display complete with our SWAT truck, ballistic vests, and other tools the tactical team uses.

Each year about this time, the department receives numerous questions regarding fireworks use within the city limits. The department would like to remind the public that fireworks are prohibited within city limits. The exception, of course, is for the city-sanction professional fireworks display that will be held at Whitney Stadium at dusk. Discharging of fireworks in city limits is punishable by an "infraction"; an offense with a fine of up to $100.

Firework use outside of the city limits in the county is allowed, granted the fire index is not at a category that would prompt a burn/fireworks ban. If that is the case, the officials would alert the public on such a ban.

For more information about firework safety, visit the fire department's website at www.dickinsonfire.com. For the current Rangeland Fire Index, you can visit the NWS website by Clicking Here.

During a recent city commission meeting, the city's animal ordinance was revised. Ordinance 1332 paved the way for several changes to the animal code. Many changes include refining the definition of some terms and removing some out dated items. A few highlights; city animal licenses are now valid for the lifetime of the animal. You may obtain a license at city hall. Make sure to bring a current certificate of rabies vaccination with you. Animal licenses greatly assist the city in locating the owners of stray animals. Citizens are strongly encourage to license their pets.

Another big change is the removal of the ban on pit bull dogs (American Staffordshire or bull terrier). However, if any animal (regardless of breed) is deemed to be a "dangerous animal" by definition, the animal control officer maintains the authority to confiscate the animal.

The police department has acquired 4 Taser X-26 Restraint Devices. These devices are being used by many police agencies both state and nation-wide. They have become a great asset and tool for officers on the street. They have been credited for saving thousands of lives in instances where deadly force would have been the only option.
The Taser X-26 uses an electrical charge to temporarily disable the motor functions of a violent, resistive suspect. The unit discharges 2 electrical probes from a cartridge, which are connected to the device by two wires. The probes are able to penetrate several layers of clothing and upon contact with the skin, immediately stops the suspect from being able to continue fighting with officers.
Dickinson police officers are currently receiving training on the functions of the Taser X-26 as well as reviewing the use of force procedures in deploying the Taser X-26 on combative suspects. Several officers volunteered to have the Taser deployed on themselves to prove its effectiveness and demonstrate its less lethal capabilities.
For more information on the Taser X-26, you can visit the Taser International company website at http://www.taser.com.
