The Dickinson Police Department is pleased to announce the addition of a full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) to the department and school district. A final agreement was reached between the city and school district early last week. The Dickinson City Commission voted to approved the amendments to the 2007 budget on the December 18th regular city commission meeting.
The department held internal interviews for the SRO position. Senior Patrolman Ron Van Doorne was chosen to head the first-ever SRO program in Dickinson. His duties start January 3rd.
In addition to being a continual presence at both Hagen JR High and Dickinson High School, SPO Van Doorne will work with the school district to develop prevention and education programs.
An overview of the SRO position will be available on the website under the "Divisions" tab within a few weeks, so check back soon.
Within the last few weeks and in light of recent school-related incidents, the department's administration has been in close contact with city administrators and school district officials concerning the possible addition of a School Resource Officer (SRO). Currently, the Dickinson Police Department has a lieutenant assigned to temporary, part-time SRO duty at Hagen JR High and Dickinson High School. LT Dave Wallace, who currently serves as the SRO for the Dickinson PD, divides half of his time with SRO duties and the other half with community service programs. The proposed addition of a permanent SRO slot enables the selected officer to concentrate all efforts on school activities and possibly develop programs such as DARE and CounterAct.
The department is committed to providing the students and school district with as many proactive, solution-oriented options as possible. We greatly appreciate the support of both the citizens and all of the administrative officials involved thus far. Together, we will ensure a high level of safety, education, and encouragement for our community's youth.
Also recently discussed at a city commission meeting was the possibility of adding a narcotics officer to the department. In the past, the department has contracted with the South Sakakawea Narcotics Task Force (SSNTF) to provide narcotics detectives. Within the last few months, the two detectives assigned to the Dickinson area have since found other employment. According to the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI - which oversees the SSNTF), retention of narcotic detectives seems to be a common problem. One possible solution is to have the department assign an experienced officer to the task force and hire a new officer as a replacement.
Currently, both topics are awaiting review and passage by the city commission. Please stay tuned to this website, the local press, and future city commission agendas www.dickinsongov.com for progress reports.

The Dickinson City Commission recently passed Ordinance 1316 which regulates limited All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) traffic within the city limits. Essentially, ATVs are now treated the same as snowmobiles, in respect to the laws enforced by the city code. A copy of Ordinance 1316 can be viewed by clicking the link below. In the coming weeks, the Dickinson Police Department will be conducting awareness programs on what the ordinance allows and what it restricts.
A quick overview of the limits and regulations of ATV/OHV operation can be found on the "OHV Quick Reference Guide" by clicking the link below.

The recent rainfall to southwest North Dakota has been a welcome sight. However, with the added rainfall, many streams and creeks that once were dry are now full. This creates road crossing to become hazardous after a heavy rainfall. The Dickinson Police Department reminds drivers to be alert to road crossings and underpasses. What may appear to be a foot or less of water may actually be several feet deep.
In the city, there are two areas of concern when heavy rain occurs. They are the underpass on 3 Avenue West and Villard (near Hardees) and the road crossing on Livestock Lane near Stockman's Livestock. When these areas become flooded, the city places "Road Closed" barriers across the road. The department reminds driver's that it is illegal to drive around these barriers when they are closing a road. Driving around a barrier not only may place you at risk for getting a ticket, but also may put the safety of you and your passengers at risk. Find an alternate route and get to your destination safe!
Summer is here, and the Dickinson Police Department
reminds you to be cautious of pedestrians and bikers when driving
throughout the city. Please be extra careful near baseball diamonds,
parks, and swimming pools. Whitney Pool, located near Rocky Butte
park in the 500 blk of 9 ST WEST, has a temporary 15 MPH speed limit
when the pool is open. Please watch for pedestrians crossing the
street from Rocky Butte to Whitney Pool.

What's with the new cars? As the Dickinson Police Department evolves into a new era of policing, the officers and administration felt that it was time to change the color scheme of the patrol cars. The current scheme has been around for about the last 10 years, and a new paint scheme would help emphasize the progressive nature of the department.
The first car to display the new scheme is our K-9 unit. As the department acquires new vehicles (usually in March or April), they will be striped with the new scheme. The current/old scheme will remain on the rest of the vehicles until they are retired out of service.

One of the biggest demands for knowledge that we have been receiving is concerning the methamphetamine activity in the area. To answer questions that you may have, we have put together a short page about meth, its uses, its signs, and steps for prevention and seeking help.
We are glad to say that the war on meth in the community is being fought well. Recent state legislation has given law enforcement the edge we needed to gain an upper hand on the meth outbreak. Also, with our newest member to the department, K-9 "Duke", the department has gained another tool to fight the war on drugs in our community.
Of course, our biggest asset to fight the war on drugs is YOU! We need your eyes and ears watching for suspicious activity that may be drug related. Tips on what to look for are located on the Meth Page by Clicking Here or by clicking the "Meth Watch" logo below.
